Gothic Country

Upon hearing these two words put together I know some rolled their eyes. But, it is an actual genre. Back in the 90s, in Denver Colorado, a movement of bands cropped up that combined old styled country with Goth. I know the members of the following bands would hate being labeled as such but it fits. It's as if Nick Cave's "And the Ass Saw the Angel" had a lovechild with Flannery O'Connor's "The Violent Bear it Away" which was raised by Dracula. Or if Johnny Cash and Sylvia Plath had a daughter who grew up and married Peter Murphy of Bauhaus.

So, here are the children of the cornfield:

16 Horsepower - Black Soul Choir

David Eugene Edwards comes out strong here chanting, "Every man is evil, yes, and every man's a liar. Unashamed with their wicked tongues sing in the black soul choir". You can really feel his utter disgust at the fallen nature of society and mankind. This is a strong theme throughout his work.

16 Horsepower - Heel on the Shovel

DEE's influences are The Birthday Party (and Nick Cave in general), the Gun Club, Joy Division, and Bob Dylan. Makes sense.

16 Horsepower - Strawfoot

Yes, another 16 Horsepower song. It's my blog and I'll fangirl if I want to. ;)

Wovenhand - Tin Finger (Live)

I don't know how he does it. But DEE can conjure an atmospehere that's so thick you can literally feel it all around you. It raises the hairs on your neck and covers your skin with goosebumps. Even DEE seems to go into a trance when he plays. He closes his eyes and begins speaking in tongues. Seeing Wovenhand live is an experience that you never forget.

Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots - Amen Choir

Tarantella - Chi Sa Doe Sara

Here Tarantella are representing for the women of this genre! The lead vocalist reminds me a little bit of Melora Creager from Rasputina.

Reverend Glasseye and his Wooden Legs - No Road Out of Houston

Some of their songs tend to fall comfortably on the Dark Cabaret side of things. Which, by the way, will be the subject of my next blog.

Stay tuned!
