The War Mech from Mace:The Dark Ages
Drunken Irish dwarves piloting machines made of whiskey casques with cannons...
it really doesnt get any better...
For a FPS, I'd say Gordon Freeman, hands down.
Because any idiot can mow down aliens with an automatic weapon...Gordon uses pretty much so anything that's handy. Grenades, rocket launcher, electromagnetic bombs, tires, saw-blades, bricks, antlions, toilets, etc.
I can't believe no one has mentioned him... Sam Fisher is my favorite, beyond all others. So much more classy than that Metal Gear Solid lackey...
(For those who aren't aware, Sam Fisher is the main character in the Splinter Cell series.)
Hey cathayanmagus don't make me play it too now...! >:( I think Fei's a complex character(I preffered Bart at that game)
And Sephiroth wasn't traggic???Did you see his mother..?!hehehe...
Seriously,Sephiroth has the looks and Squall has the character.I always prefered characters with distant personallity.
PSX=> Xenogears=> Fei Fong Wong
Tourtured Soul and True Love. Fei is the Man! hands down, I'm sorry, but he'd just go Id on Seperoth and would take him out to school with the True Power, heh-heh, if I grew out my hair again and dyed it white/silver I could pass as him... got the Nodachi and duster :P But alas, Fei Fong Wong is my favorite. Truly he is the most tragic hero... how many lifetimes does he live to find his true love and every single F#<%ing time he looses her over and over and over!!! AURGH!!! Elly!!!
Damn, now I gotta play that game again because of this.
For shear badassatude, you gotta give it up for Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts. He established himself in FF7, but when he decends from the sky and blows your ass up in the first five seconds of the Platinum Match while One Winged Angel plays...hot damn!
If you're looking for the best fighter or strongest character...you're looking at folks like Ness (highly underrated...psychic powers rock), Samus Aran (especially at the end of Super Metroid when she goes Hyper), Cloud Strife, and oft forgotten "Thunder God" Cid Orlandu...who's power alone can carry you through the end of FFT.
If you want over-all...that's a little tougher...
Kefka has shear audacity on his side, but can't really back it up. Sephiroth's got the look, he's got the gear, and he's got the power...but he's too esoteric. Master Chief? He's got guns, guts, and about 4 million kills under his belt...but he just doesn't have the charisma. So...who's the best? The blob from a Boy and His Blob, of course!
I suspect it is buried forever in a catalogue of "titles owned" to be resurrected in 2105 as 'Retro' or something. Oh well. By then I will have a quantum computer and terabyte of RAM and probably no longer care. Still a shame, though.
Gaidheal write: Aye, I bought it at some bargain basement rate because I liked the artwork and figured that even if the game was hopeless the girl would look good on my shelf. It's so good I have been in discussion with various developers in the past about possibly doing a sequel but apparently the whole issue is somewhat complicated :-(
That would be great if they did, providing they didn't mess with the gameplay much. Its rare that a game comes along that I enjoy the entire game.
Anyway, wasn't impressed with the character.. after all, there is NO character to Gordon Freeman to speak of. Half the point, I feel, since it gives you a lot freedom to do things however you want to.
