Just finished an article in a British Newspaper online being the American Press is CRAP except for maybe Weird/Mother Jones/Strange and Paranoia Magazine.

In it they spoke to recent college graduates in the hardest hit European Countries like Greece, Spain, Italy etc. and although the governements will TELL you that unemployment is ruuning say at 15% or 20% the actual number is much HIGHER...In parts of Greece it's almost at 60% of those between 18-30...Spain is showing about 42% for 18-30 etc etc...Remember NEVER believe the Government numbers!

All this shows is many highly educated young people with NO money, NO dreams and lots of time...Which usually leads to bad things: Drugs, alcohol, partying, hooking up non-stop etc etc...Basically me back when I was 20...Which is okay as long as you grow out of it...Truth be told most don't grow out of it...They just crash and burn.

You know that REALLY smart friend who he/she was hot or handsome and he/she USED to do really well and now they're fat, sad and miserable?

What I did notice is all the people they interviewed were well spoken, well dressed, highly motivated, BUT all their majors were crap...Liberal Arts, Greek History, Tourism, Ocean Biology etc etc...There were no HARD science or technological majors among that crew.

So my advice YET AGAIN to those in the US who want to teach the children, be physical trainers, art, social science, psychology, Asian/Hispanic/Women/Black studies etc etc...Is STOP...Get a major that you can use and as gay as it sounds plumbers, repair men make good money and you can do your music and art on the side.

I got lucky, but all I am is a paper pushing, weapon wearing babysitter...I found my niche...I suggest that you out there who are about to start in a career look for your niche, because the money is drying up and soon we'll really feel it in the US...We think we have it bad but we still haven't hit bottom.

To those who believe they are giving up their dreams...I say Nyet...It's just a way to a means...I swing weapons in order to live life according to how I want...If real punks were smart and not so anti-establishment we would take over law enforcement and the medical field.

Not just be roadies for 90 year old Misfit Tribute bands or pretend that we can make a great living as:  Go-Go Dancers, baristas, bartenders, waiters, doing hair, part time bass players in 3 bands, working at a used book/CD/Record store etc.

The dream is to get to what you want without needing and starving along the way...Too many of us either fell to the side and became yuppies or fat old punks with flip flops...The point was to get INSIDE the establishment and change it from within...What good is all the Tats, piercings, ratty clothes and hardcore music you play if you don't really stand for anything besides trying to look cool in front of other posers, drink cheap beer, do a line of tweek and mash at the Mosh Pit?

There are plenty of good (money making) specialties for nursing, not just geriatrics.  You're right, every other girl I talk to has a dream to be in OB and peds or some such (ok, trauma/er blah blah blah is high up there too).  *puke*  Don't ever put me in that fluffy pink world of vaginas and babies.  No offense to any other nurses reading this blog who dig it, it's just not for me, i'm not soft and squishy enough for all that.  Besides, nursing has its way of weeding out those who are faint of heart.  I wouldn't last two days in peds/mom and baby, whatever you call it...a girl I know didn't last two months despite her professing love for it.  It just happens.  There's nothing wrong with dreaming about it or having it as a goal.  Most people don't go into those specialties straight out of school anyway, you have to work your way up there...and at least where I live, it's competitive as all get out...but you know what?--that makes for better nursing care.

As far as the market for marine biologists...I have no idea, I'm not one and never will be. You never hear of geologists being in high demand either, but I've never met one who is out of work (I also haven't met that many, more than five, less than ten) and the few I've met all do fairly well for themselves.  I'm sure there are specialties in marine biology just as there are in geology, some may be easier to get into, some others might not.  I don't think it's fair to compare a marine biologist to a nursing speciality though...I feel like the field of nursing is so differently set up than almost every other career path, and it's also quite fluid with many lucrative specialities...I'm not so sure that's the case for marine biologists, but I honestly don't know...do you?

I think there is room and money for everyone if you're really awesome.  If you want to go into whatever job and just do it for a paycheck then no matter what you do, you're not going to go that far.  IIRC, this is kind of the issue that I have with some of the occupy brats (some, not all).

The thing is, not everyone has or will find a niche...I think I'm in that group and I don't think there's anything really "wrong" with that.  Instead of people sitting around and complaining about not being able to find a job, you're right, they need to do *something* to get by.  This is the type of environment that in the past, has bred innovation and progress.  It will be interesting to see how this generation responds.

True Marine Biology is a science but how much market is there for a Marine Biology?

I was once in a RN program and EVERY nurse wanted to be a Pediatric Nurse (Baby Nurse)...That's all fine and dandy but the money is in Gerontology Nursing (Old People's Nurse)and NOT everyone can be a Baby Nurse...Same applies to marine biologist...Great major no real job opportunities.

ocean biology is hard science...marine biologist.   no countries want to admit how bad things are...the US or otherwise.
